An architect by training, Duarte has been systematically surveying the Portuguese territory with his camera since 1986. He is a well acclaimed author of many books, namely: Portugal — O Sabor da Terra (1997-1998), Portugal Património (2007-2008) and the trilogy Caminhar Oblíquo, Depois da Estrada and Viagem Maior (2020). He works with the Landscape Museum (Museu da Paisagem, IPL) since its start. Also he is the editor of the blog Cidade Infinita. Duarte is often invited to talk at conferences.
